Pondering the “Pledge of Allegiance”

I experienced something very odd this 4th of July – we were at a local community rodeo enjoying the fun and games when everyone stopped to say the Pledge of Allegiance. As I stood there staring at United States flag, I couldn’t say the pledge. Or more specifically, I couldn’t say all of it even as I tried.

It was very odd.

Some of the emotions might have been because it has been a while since I have repeated the Pledge of Allegiance.

I know it is not because I don’t enjoy or like this country – far from it! I am blessed and honored to be a part of the USA (even when I don’t agree with the direction it is going).

No. The emotions I was feeling was from a different source.[@more@]

My allegiance has already been given: to the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings. If I am not my own, how can I pledge to something else?

I am no longer an “American” in a sense – Yes, I still hold an American password and live in this country. However, in reality, I am a member of the Kingdom of God. And as a member of God’s Kingdom, there are no geopolitical nations. There is only those who have pledged to God and those who have not. Two choices. That’s it.

If you have pledged to the Creator of All Things, then your nationality and ethnicity no longer matters. Granted, this does not mean you have to give up your cultural and heritage – it does mean that you should no longer be caught up in the workings of a geopolitical nation that is just a blimp of the screen of history. (don’t take this too far and stop voting – there is a balance)

In talking to my wife, she brought a very good point about the Pledge of Allegiance. When it says “one nation under God”, it means that the allegiance to the USA is under or below our allegiance to God.

Just something to ponder…

  • Whohoo! I’m not alone. I haven’t been able to say the Pledge of Allegiance in a very long time. And people wonder why I got up and left a church service where they said the Pledge…..

E may make a good point. I’ll have to look into it farther, but since that portion of the Pledge only came into play in the last 50 years or so, I’m not sure that was their intent.
